my colleague was nursing a teenage cancer patient today
i was her partner on duty.
when we r preparing the medication,
his medication list was endless..
did not enter his isolation room until much later in the afternoon..
when the patient press his call bell..
me: hi, how can i help u? ( i saw that he is doing some craft beads)
pt: i din wanna disturb u actually but this machine is alarming again.. (smile)
me: ok, no problem, the intravenous drug finished, i just need to add on some fluid..
pt: ok.. (smile) i am creating my sis fac using this craft beads. (he then continue to talk about how he has created some other beads works and what else will he do later in the day..)
me: wow, that is very nice of you.. (pt look very cheerful, but in his eyes, i can c his sorrow and loneliness..)
then we again chat for awhile...
i came out of the room .. i feel sad for him..
he has to be isolated in a room due to recent transplant..
i wanted to chat with him longer but i am afraid that i will 'contaminate' him
i left shortly i finished my task..
i admire his preseverance to deal with his illness..
he had to take countless of pills everyday to sustain his life and yet, he was able to smile and laugh when i enter his room. he had been thru alot more than i can ever imagine.
sometimes, i felt like my life is so miserable, dragging myself to wake up and work..life is meaningless, boring, depressing, full of stress and nonsense!!
but after i met this pt, i suddenly realised that i have to be gratefull to be able to work and support myself..
mayb i did take things for granted and did not realised that all this are my blessing.
think i better not complain so much and whenever i am, hopefully i will remind myself to count my blessings...
recently had a long complaint.
eventhou it is not under my time of duty, but all of us did share the same anxiety level and concern with the staff on duty that day.
to be a nurse, people not only expect you to be a nurse, but at the same time, they qill ask million and one questions and expect million of one thing from us.
they expect us to be the:
nurse
doctor
maid
waitress
pharmacy
social worker
physiotherapist
a person-who-had-answer-to-whatever-question-that-thay-have
sigh!!
it is really not easy to be a nurse...
those who wanted to be a nurse out there, please think twice hor...
